Ministry of Humanitarian affairs Minister, Sadiya Umar Farouq week in Review - 31st January 2021.

On Monday, the Minister was part of the Federal Government's delegation to Sokoto State to commiserate with the government, Sultan and people of the state over the fire incident that devastated the Shagari Modern Market.

The Minister was gratified to learn that #nemanigeria is on top of the situation. She have directed that a thorough assessment is conducted with a report ready in 2 weeks with the aim of preventing future occurrence.

On Tuesday, HE Muhammadu Buhari inaugurated the 18-member Presidential Steering Committee on Alternate School Programme (ASP) with HM Sadiya Umar Farouq and HM Education as Co-Chair persons.

The ASP which focuses on out of school children provides an innovative & flexible approach to learning as well as skills development.

By targeting out of school children, the ASP will ensure that Nigeria's abysmal statistics is reversed because according to UNICEF, Nigeria boasts the highest number of out of school children globally with "one in every five of the world's out-of-school children in Nigeria."

That translates to 10.5 million children aged 5-14 years. There is also a high percentage of absenteeism with only 61% of children aged 6 to 11 able to attend primary school regularly. On Wednesday she joined fellow cabinet level colleagues in attending the virtual Federal Executive Council meeting.

According to the Minister, she is happy to announce that the Grant for Rural Women programme introduced in 2020 to sustain the social inclusion agenda of President Buhari’s Administration is impacting more and more Nigerians. As you must be aware, the programme is designed to provide a one-off grant to some of the poorest and most vulnerable women in rural and peri-urban areas of the country.

This week the programme rolled into more states. On Wednesday the Perm Sec #fmhdsd Bashir Nura Alkali represented me at the flag-off in Kaduna state where an estimated 4000 women would be impacted, the minister said. The Perm Sec Bashir Nura Alkali was also in Lagos on Friday for the Flag off of the same programme. He was joined at the Police College Ikeja venue by HE Dr. Hamzat Femi the Dep. He also flagged off the program in Abeokuta on Saturday where he was joined by HE Noimat Salako-Oyedele, the Deputy Governor of Ogun State. 3,500 rural and vulnerable women will receive N20,000 each in the state.

The flag-off train of the Grant for Rural Women berthed in Enugu and Anambra states today Sunday, January 31, 2021, with the Perm Sec #fmhdsd Bashir Nura Alkali representing the Minister at the flag-off ceremonies in both states.
