NERC Review of Meter Prices

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission NERC gives a new update in regards to the Review of Meter Prices. See details below!

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission NERC is an independent body, established by the Electric Power Sector Reform Act of 2005 to undertake technical and economic regulation of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry. The Commission is to, among others license operators, determine operating codes and standards, establish customer rights and obligations and set cost reflective industry tariffs. The Commission has its head quarters in Abuja, and currently has presence in most states of the country through its Forum Offices which function as the first level of escalation for customer complaints that are not resolved by the electricity distribution companies (DisCos).

According a NERC, it approved the review of meter prices to reflect the forex adjustment reality to avoid scarcity of meters in its commitment towards putting an end to estimated billing methodology. The order on the review of unit cost of end use meters under the meter asset provide and National mass metering programme regulations was effective since 6 September 2023.

MAPs are to supply meters to all customers who had paid previously for meters before the effective date at the prevailing rate with additional increase in cost.

The cost of electricity meters was reviewed due to adjustments in foreign exchange rates. Most components that make up our meters are imported, and the foreign exchange rate affects their cost.

With the dollar rate on the rise, NERC approved the review of meter prices to keep them accessible. Our mission is to make sure that every registered electricity user gets a meter, NERC said.
