Tragic Road Accident Involving Anthony Joshua Claims Two Lives in Ogun State
In a shocking incident today, December 29, 2025, Nigerian-British heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua was involved in a fatal road crash along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Makun, Ogun State, Nigeria. The accident, which occurred around 11 a.m., resulted in the deaths of two passengers traveling in the same vehicle as the star athlete.
According to reports from the Ogun State Police Command and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Joshua was a rear-seat passenger in a Lexus SUV when the vehicle collided with a stationary truck. Preliminary investigations point to a burst tire causing the driver to lose control, possibly compounded by excessive speed during an overtaking maneuver.
Joshua sustained minor injuries and was promptly rescued and taken to an undisclosed hospital for treatment. Tragically, two other occupants in the SUV lost their lives at the scene, while others escaped unhurt.
Eyewitness accounts and circulating footage depict a chaotic scene, with emergency responders quickly arriving to assist. Joshua, who has deep family roots in nearby Sagamu and often visits Nigeria during holidays, was reportedly en route to spend time with relatives following his recent victory over Jake Paul.
This incident highlights the persistent dangers on Nigeria's highways, particularly the notoriously busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, often cited as one of the country's deadliest roads due to factors like speeding, poor vehicle maintenance, and roadside hazards.
