The Department of Agricultural Extension, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development today held a practical training on Mushroom Cultivation.
The training was organised by the Gender and Youth Division of the department for staff with the objective of improving the capacity of staff to deliver on their job and also apply it to create an additional income stream to help them make ends meet and prepare for retirement.
The training was also desigend to diversify benefnciaries' household diet and improve nutrition as the mushroom has up to 39% protein and contains no fat has up to 39% protein and contains no fat or starch. It also contains vitamins B1, A and C, as well as other vitamins.
The enterprise has the advantage of requiring very small initial capital outlay and space. Mushroom cultivation can be done in a very low tech environment and without fertilizer or chemicals.
