Unpaid Stipends: N-Power Beneficiaries Takes FG To Court

In today's latest Npower news, Over 237,000 former N-Power beneficiaries have taken legal action against the Federal Government at the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, Abuja Division. The suit, filed under Suit No. NICN/ABJ/214/2025, lists ten lead claimants representing the affected individuals.

The defendants in the case include the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, the Attorney General of the Federation, the Accountant General of the Federation, and Mr. Akindele Egbuwalo, who oversees the N-Power Programme.

The claimants allege that they were denied their stipends, allowances, and other entitlements after rendering services under the N-Power initiative. They argue that the government's refusal to pay violates contractual agreements as well as the Nigerian Labour and Employment Laws. They also claim that the defendants’ actions fall short of international best practices for employment and social intervention programs.

As a result, the beneficiaries are seeking several declarations and orders from the court. These include an order directing the defendants to pay all outstanding allowances, 5 billion as general damages and compensation, and #50 million to cover the cost of filing the lawsuit. The court is also asked to grant any other orders it deems fit under the circumstances.

The court has ordered the defendants to respond within 14 days of receiving the complaint or risk the case proceeding in their absence. All official communication regarding the suit is to be directed to the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation in Abuja. The outcome of this case could significantly impact how future government empowerment programs are managed and enforced in Nigeria.
