What is Project 20K?

Project 20K is a national internship initiative run by the Department of Employment & Labour (in partnership with relevant government departments) that offers workplace experience to qualifying unemployed graduates across South Africa for the 2025–2027 financial years. The programme aims to place graduates into various roles at provincial and local departments so they can build skills, gain on-the-job experience, and improve future employability.

Who can apply?

Project 20K is intended for graduates who meet the following basic criteria:

  • South African citizens
  • Currently unemployed and seeking workplace experience
  • Have not previously participated in any internship programme
  • Holders of a matric certificate and a relevant post-school qualification

Preference will be given to qualifying South African youth, persons with disabilities and individuals from previously disadvantaged groups. Note that selection criteria will also be tailored to the specific requirements of each role posted.
