SASSA Announces New Social Grant Amounts Increment

In today's latest SASSA news, the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) Chief Executive Officer, Mr Themba Matlou has welcomed the increase in social grant amounts as announced by the Minister of Finance, Mr Enoch Godongwana on Wednesday, 25 February 2026.

According to SASSA, tabling the Budget for the 2026/27 financial year, Minister Godongwana announced that R292.8 billion has been allocated to social grants for this financial year. To this end, social grant amounts will increase as follows from April 2026:

New Social Grant Amount Increment:

1. Oder Persons Grant, Disability Grant and Care Dependency Grant will increase by R80 to R2 400.

2. War Veterans Grant will increase by R80 to R2 420

3. Foster Child Grant will increase by R40 to R1 290 in April 2026 and by a further R10 in October 2026 to R1 300.

4. A Child Support Grant and Grant-In-Aid will increase by R20 to R580.

5. COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) will continue in its current form over the year ahead.

SASSA stated that they welcome the announcement by Minister Godongwana. Social grants provide a lifeline to the most vulnerable in society, this much-need increase will help cushion our valued social grant beneficiaries against economic hardships. This further reaffirms government’s commitment to alleviating poverty and inequality”, said SASSA CEO Mr Themba Matlou.

Mr Matlou further welcomed the announcement that the COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) will continue in its current form, noting that this grant provides financial support and acts as a safety net for the most vulnerable in society and unemployed people who are of working age.“We are also working tirelessly to connect social grant beneficiaries with economic opportunities thus ensuring sustainable livelihoods”, added Matiou.
